What is oil pulling? Should I be doing it?
We at Parkway Dental like to keep on top of the latest trends and give our patients all the facts on contemporary health movements. You might have been scrolling through your recent social media feed and heard about oil pulling for teeth and wanted to know more, our dentist in Havant has put together a guide on all you need to know about this natural remedy.
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is an ancient process used by our ancestors to remove impurities from the body and through this practice improve oral health. The act of oil pulling is believed to take away bacteria and actually encourage the production of saliva. The practice itself asks you to swirl a tablespoon of oil around your mouth. This act in theory pulls oil through your teeth and purifies your mouth. You should swill the oil for around twenty minutes by which time you should notice that the oil has changed to a thick, cloudy colour. It’s very important that you spit the oil and never swallow it as it’s full of germs.
But does it work?
There have actually been lots of scientifics studies surrounding oil pulling and what effect it has on your oral health and there’s even been investigation into which is the best type of oil to use. Some people believe that if you choose to pull with coconut oil over sesame oil you are more likely to reduce the signs of gum disease. It’s thought that olive oil is great to pull with as it contains lots of natural antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
It’s important to note that though there has been lots of positive research surrounding oil pulling dental bodies like the ADA don’t consider this natural remedy to be a reliable or medically approved practice, so always consider talking with your dentist in Havant before beginning the practice.
Are there side effects?
As yet there aren’t any physical known side effects to oil pulling. That being said you might feel that your jaw aches or that you’re developing headaches, but this is likely down to the repetitive nature of the pulling itself. This is why you should always act with caution and consult your dentist in Havant before beginning the practice.
Other ways to keep your mouth in tip top condition
If maybe you’re thinking oil pulling isn’t for you after all, don’t fear. There are lots of ways in which you can keep on top of oral health without oiling up.
